The History of Clinton Presbyterian Church

Our congregation began as a Sabbath School in the schoolhouse at Hunt's Mills in 1825.  The village became Clinton in 1828.

In the Spring of 1829, Princeton Seminary sent a student to preach a series of sermons.  Later that year the Presbytery agreed to send a regular pulpit supply preacher.  Land was donated and a square, unadorned stone building was completed by the end of 1830.  The church was formally organized in June 1831 with ten communicants and three ruling elders.

During the period of 1864-1868, the Church building was remodeled with a steeple and balcony.  After the blizzard of 1888 blew down the steeple, church members decided to enlarge the sanctuary to its present size and add the organ.  The Pre-Raphaelite stained glass windows were added in 1906.

Clinton Presbyterian Church is governed by a Board of Elders called the Session.  Clinton Presbyterian Church's caring ministries are directed by the Board of Deacons.  Elders and Deacons are elected by the congregation through a prayerful nominating process.  Each Officer is usually elected to a three-year term.

The Elders are responsible, together with the pastors, for the spiritual growth and nurture of the Congregation.  In addition, the Session oversees the physical, fiscal and program administration of the Church.  Each Elder currently serves as a Ministry Team Chair, or sits on at least one Ministry Team of the Church.

The Deacons minister to the people - especially to those who are in need, to the sick and to any who may be in distress.  Each Deacon is responsible for a Deacon Neighborhood, a group of members in a geographic neighborhood.

The members and officers together seek to serve Jesus Christ, administer the work of the church, and minister to those whom God has put in our care.
