Obituary of Joan deRuiter

Joan (née Albenesius) deRuiter, aged 75, of Chatham, NJ, passed away on Monday, February 3, 2025. Born on April 28, 1949, in Elizabeth, NJ, she was the daughter of the late Gervase H. Albenesius and the late Adeline (née Amicucci) Albenesius. Joan graduated with a Bachelor’s degree from Montclair University in 1971, where she met the love of her life, Glenn, whom she married on April 10, 1971. Together, they raised two children, Eric and Laura, who meant the world to her. She was also blessed with two grandchildren, Ryan and Zachary, who brought her immense joy.

Joan continued her education, earning a Master’s degree in French from Rutgers University in 1996. Her passion for the French language translated into her career as a high school French teacher, where she taught at Randolph High School, New Providence High School, and Hackettstown High School.

In addition to her teaching career, Joan was passionate about historic home preservation and was a founding member of the West Portal Historic Society. She loved listening to classic rock, with Eric Clapton being one of her favorite artists. In her free time, she volunteered for the Puppies Behind Bars program. Most importantly, she cherished every moment spent with her beloved family.

Joan is preceded in death by her parents, Gervase and Adeline Albenesius, and her beloved husband, Glenn deRuiter.

She will be forever remembered by her son, Eric deRuiter, and his wife, Kristie; her daughter, Laura Buttler; and her grandsons, Ryan Michael Buttler and Zachary William Buttler.
