Obituary of Michael James Shannon

Michael James Shannon, 87, of Port Murray, NJ, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, February 18, 2025. He was born on March 4, 1937, in Danbury, CT, to the late Walter and Myrtle “Mickie” Shannon.

Michael proudly served in the United States Army from 1958 to 1963. He earned his bachelor’s degree from Central Connecticut in 1963 and later obtained his master’s degree from the University of Portland in 1972. He spent his career working in the apparel industry for companies including White Stag, Arrow Apparels, and Cluet Peabody as what would be consider today as the Chief Information Officer (CIO). He always liked to talk business and would impart his wisdom on any willing listener. 

In 1964, Michael married the love of his life, Mary Fraser Shannon, and together they built a beautiful life, raising three children: Patricia, Michael, and John....3 kids in under 24 months! A devout member of St. Theodore Roman Catholic Church, he was actively involved in the Knights of Columbus and was an enthusiastic member of the church choir. Michael loved to play the classical guitar, play tennis, and ski, but above all, Michael cherished time spent with his family.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 60 years, Mary Fraser Shannon; his daughter, Patricia Hanson and her husband Tom; his sons, Michael Shannon and his wife Michele, and John Shannon and his wife Courtney; and his cherished grandchildren, Michael Shannon III, IsabelAidan, and Brynn Shannonand Sean and Kate Hanson. He was predeceased by his brother, Terrance Shannon, and his sister, Kathy Shannon Matthews.

Funeral Mass will be offered on Saturday, February 22nd, at 10:00 AM at St. Theodore Roman Catholic Church, 855 NJ Route 57, Port Murray, NJ 07865. Arrangements are under the care of Martin Funeral Home, Clinton, NJ. To send condolences to the family, please visit www.martinfh.com.
