Obituary of George Michael Wenger

July 17, 1942 – March 14, 2025

George Michael Wenger, known as Mike, Dad, and Pop-Pop, passed away peacefully on March 14th at the age of 82, surrounded by his loving wife, sons, and grandchildren.

Mike was a devoted husband to Betty for 57 years, a proud father to his three sons—Michael, Scott, and Timothy—and a cherished grandfather to nine grandchildren. His family was his greatest joy, and he took immense pride in their accomplishments.

Mike grew up in South River, New Jersey, and graduated from South River High School. He then enlisted in the United States Air Force, serving as a flight simulator specialist during the early years of the Vietnam War. After his military service, he attended and graduated with honors from the RCA Institute of Technology in New York, setting the stage for a distinguished career as an electrical engineer.

Throughout his career, he worked with Western Electric, Bell Labs, AT&T, Lucent, and Andrews Corporation, where he made significant contributions to the field. A true innovator, he was awarded four U.S. patents, leaving a lasting impact on telecommunications and engineering.

Beyond his professional achievements, Mike had a deep passion for photography, capturing life’s most meaningful moments for his family and friends. He also cherished his monthly gatherings with the ROMEO (Retired Old Men Eating Out) group, where he took great pride in documenting their shared history.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Betty; his sons, Michael (Jennifer), Scott (Kate), and Timothy (Claudia); his sister, Leslie Fitzgerald (Steve); and his nine grandchildren—Tristan, Venezia, Vendula, Michael, Gabriela, Eric, Oliver, Cooper, and Logan. He was preceded in death by his brother, Richard.

His kindness, wisdom, and love will forever remain in the hearts of those who knew him.

A celebration of life gathering is being planned for the summer. Details will be shared in the coming weeks. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Mike’s memory to the Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation (Please Click Here to Donate), St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital (Please Click Here to Donate), or St. Hubert’s Animal Welfare Center (Please Click Here to Donate).
