Obituary of John William Wood, III
December 25, 1935 – April 1, 2025
John William Wood III, a devoted father, accomplished engineer, and lifelong seeker of knowledge, passed away peacefully on April 1, 2025, in Flemington, NJ, at the age of 89. Born on Christmas Day in 1935 in Tacoma, Washington, he was the beloved son of the late John William and Roberta Louise Wood.
John's life was a testament to curiosity, innovation, and faith. He earned his Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Washington and later completed his Master of Science at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. His distinguished career as a mechanical engineer spanned decades and included groundbreaking contributions to space, aviation, and technology. Among his most notable work were projects such as the Lunar Drill, the Ready Ratchet, cordless power tools, Navy fighter jets and drone guidance systems, and early innovations in electric car batteries. In honor of his profound impact, John’s name is proudly inscribed on the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum Wall of Honor for his contributions to our nation’s aviation and space exploration.
John was also a man of deep faith and lifelong spiritual inquiry. He was an active member of the Church of the Holy Spirit in Lebanon, NJ, where he found community and purpose. His interests extended beyond engineering—he was passionate about astronomy, religious studies, and sailing, always inspired by the vastness of the universe and the mysteries of life.
He was predeceased by his beloved wife, Sharon D. Wood; his daughter, Sarah Marie Wood; and his brother, Robert Wood. He is survived by his loving children: Wendy C. Wood; Christopher and Judy Klaus; Kevin and Laura Klaus; Lisa and Ronald Wilson; Laura and Guy Baggerly; and Deborah and Christopher Hardin. John was a proud grandfather to 15 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild. He is also survived by his brother, Charles Wood, and his wife, Phyllis.
A Celebration of Life service will be held on Saturday, July 26, 2025, at 11:00 AM at the Church of the Holy Spirit, 3 Haytown Road, Lebanon, NJ 08833, with The Rev. Phillip Carr-Jones officiating.
John will be remembered not only for his remarkable intellect and achievements but also for his humility, his quiet strength, and his enduring love for his family, faith, and the stars above.
