Obituary of Simon R. Kelemen

January 29, 1952 – November 27, 2025

Simon R. Kelemen, age 73, of Annandale, NJ, passed away on November 27, 2025, at the Hunterdon Care Center.

Born in New Brunswick, NJ on January 29, 1952, Simon was the son of the late Simon and Margaret (nee Vilagos) Kelemen. He graduated from Trenton State College in 1973 and went on to earn his Ph.D. from Rutgers University in 1986. His dedication to learning and natural curiosity shaped not only his career, but also the way he viewed the world.

Simon was a distinguished physical chemist and served as a research chemist for ExxonMobil Research and Engineering. Throughout his career, he made significant contributions to the scientific community, earning the prestigious Chemical Society Storch Award, publishing over 100 scientific papers, and holding more than 35 patents. His work reflected his intelligence, passion for innovation, and commitment to advancing science.

Beyond his professional achievements, Simon was most proud of his family. He married the love of his life, Deborah (née Walker) Kelemen, and together they built a life filled with laughter, partnership, and unwavering devotion. Simon was a proud and loving father to his four children—Brian, Kyle and his wife Elizabeth, Evan and his wife Sarah, and Christine—and became a cherished grandfather to seven grandchildren who brought him endless joy.

Simon found happiness in the simple things: collecting baseball cards, spending time outdoors, and enjoying family gatherings. He especially treasured time spent backpacking, where he felt most connected to nature and at peace. Above all, Simon loved being a father and grandfather, and took great pride in nurturing, guiding, and celebrating his family.

In addition to his parents, Simon was predeceased by his beloved sister, Marge Skvara.

Simon will be remembered for his brilliant mind, humble spirit, gentle humor, and deep love for those closest to him. His legacy continues in the family he cherished and in the scientific contributions that will endure for generations.

Services will be held privately at the convenience of the family.
