Obituary of Donald Edward Mittermaier
Donald Mittermaier, age 65, passed away peacefully at his home on December 18, 2025, surrounded by his beloved family.
Donald was born on September 16, 1960, in Newark, New Jersey, to the late Eleanor and Joseph Mittermaier. He grew up in West Orange, NJ, and graduated from Mountain High School in 1978. He went on to earn his bachelor’s degree from Seton Hall University.
Forty-four years ago, Donald met the love of his life, Patti (née Strauch). They shared 36 years of marriage built on love, partnership, and devotion to family. Donald was a loving and devoted husband and a proud father to his two daughters, Andrea and Lauren. His family was always his greatest priority, and he cherished every moment spent with his girls.
Donald enjoyed a successful career as a computer programmer and systems analyst with Merck, where he worked for many years at their Whitehouse, NJ location. Outside of his professional life, he was deeply committed to serving his community. Donald volunteered for many years with the Bloomsbury Hose Company, where he proudly served as a firefighter and as secretary of the department.
A man of many interests, Donald had a passion for classic cars, especially his beloved yellow 1956 Ford truck. He also enjoyed metal detecting, antiquing, and tinkering with computers and electronics, often building and experimenting in his spare time. Known for his eclectic taste in music, Donald could appreciate everything from Talking Heads to Tuvan throat singing.
Donald is survived by his beloved wife, Patti Mittermaier; his daughters, Andrea and Lauren Mittermaier; his brother, Robert Mittermaier and his wife, Kathy; his sister-in-law, Lydia Mittermaier; and many loving nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, Joseph and Eleanor Mittermaier, and by his brother, Charlie Mittermaier.
Family and friends are invited to attend a visitation on Monday, December 22, 2025, from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Martin Funeral Home, 1761 Route 31, Clinton, NJ 08809. Cremation will be held privately following the visitation.
