Obituary of Edward Anthony Butler

Butler, Edward Anthony age 71, of Houston, Texas, passed away on Sunday, September 17,2023, in Phillipsburg, NewJersey. Ed was born on February 28, 1952, in Phillipsburg, New Jersey. He is the son of the late John William and Helen (Mooney) Butler. 

Ed graduated from North Hunterdon High School in 1970. He received his Bachelor's Degree from Allentown College of Saint Francis de Sales and his Masters Degree in Public Administration from Baruch College in Manhattan. Ed retired from New Jersey Tri-County Probation Department as Assistant Chief Probation Officer covering Hunterdon, Warren and Somerset Counties. Active in politics from high school Student Council to Hampton Borough Council and Mayor of Hampton, Ed enjoyed an active community life. As Mayor, Ed was instrumental in the acquiring of the land and the building of the Hampton Recreational Park. 

Ed was a man of Faith, who took his religious obligation to the Church seriously wherever he went. Ed was also a devoted son to his vibrant mother Helen who so appreciated his company. His interest in sports and his wealth of knowledge was enviable. He could and would debate statistics, history, players, games and scores with anyone at any time. Ed loved his Yankees and his Eagles to a fault. He was also dedicated to the wrestling team of North Hunterdon High School and followed the matches whenever he could. 

In October of 2019 Ed married the late Ellen Gray at Saint Ann's in Hampton, NJ. The couple moved to Houston, Texas where they briefly enjoyed life with Ellen's daughter,son-in-law and grandchildren. Ed's beloved Ellen passed away in April of 2022. She was the love of his life. Ed enjoyed all types of music,read American and Irish history constantly and loved following sports. Most of all though, he enjoyed his friends, of which there were many. He was also quite proud of his family and often would talk of the accomplishments of his brothers and sisters, cousins, nieces and nephews, step-grandchildren, and even other people's children. Ed was a great conversationalist, a great brother, a great friend. He will be missed by many.

Friends and relatives are invited to visit withs Ed’s Family on Friday, September 22nd from 4:00 until 8:00 PM at the Martin Funeral Home, 1761 Route 31, Clinton NJ 08809. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered on Saturday, September 23rd at 11:00 AM. To send condolences to the family please visit www.martinfh.com
