Obituary of John Ineson Smith

Dr. John Ineson Smith, age 87, died Monday, December 7, 2015 in his home in Annandale, NJ. John was born October 10, 1928 in Kennebunkport, ME. He was the son of the late Hugh Bernice Smith and the late Frederica Ilsley Ineson. John was married to the late Jean Chandler Threadgold for 52 years. John moved early in his childhood to Stephenville, TX where he grew up. While at MIT in Boston, John met Jean in England while on summer scholarship in Chelmsford. They were later married in 1959 in Cleveland, OH and lived the rest of their married life in the United States. John and Jean lived in Boston, MA; Lafayette, IN; Morristown and Mendham, NJ before relocating to Hunterdon County in 1976. John received a Bachelor's degree at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, a Master of Science in Electrical Engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and a Doctor of Philosophy from Purdue University. John taught Electrical Engineering at Purdue University in West Lafayette, IN. He later worked at The Marconi Company in Chelmsford England and at Raytheon in Massachusetts. In the mid 1960's, John began what was to become an illustrious career at Bell Laboratories in Whippany, New Jersey. There he was instrumental in developing the early technology for the modern cellular telephone. John later worked at Anadigics in Warren, NJ, where he became their first Fellow. Dr. John Smith was an Elder in the Bethlehem Presbyterian Church in Pittstown, NJ. He also sang in the choir for many years and was known to do mathematical equations during choir rehearsals. John is survived by his companion Patricia Orrok; his daughter Dr. Lesley Jane Ineson Smith and her spouse Patryk William Silver of New Glarus, WI; his son Paul Henry Chandler Smith and his spouse Elizabeth Chih-Yun Yuan of Boise, ID; and two granddaughters, Leland Mei-Lan Smith and Lyndon Wai-Lan Smith of Boise, ID. A Memorial Service is scheduled for Tuesday, December 15th at 11:00 AM at Bethlehem Presbyterian Church, 2 Race Street, Pittstown, NJ.
