Obituary of Terrell M. Essig

Terrell Martin Essig (Terry, T-Marty) passed away peacefully at Hunterdon Medical Center Tuesday morning March 5, 2019 with his loving wife Patricia (Hurley) Essig by his side.

He was born May 19, 1939 in Perth Amboy to Jacob and Catherine Essig.  Terry graduated from Woodbridge High School class of 1957.  He enlisted in the United States Army where he became a paratrooper in the 101st Airborne Division (Screaming Eagle) at Fort Campbell, KY and served in Mortar Battery, 1st Airborne Battle Group, 327th Infantry and achieved rank of Sergeant before being honorably discharged.

He married Patricia Hurley on February 23, 1963 with whom he shared a love of visiting and spending time at Island Beach, NJ.

In 1976, he graduated with honors from Newark College of Engineering with a Bachelors Degree in Civil Engineering.  He obtained both his PE and LS licenses and eventually started his own land surveying and engineering business.  He was a member of the NJ Society of Professional Land Surveyors.  In addition, he was also known for Essig’s Christmas Tree Farm that has been in operation for the past 28 years.

Terry was an avid builder, designer and flyer of remote control airplanes and a member of the AMAA.  He loved riding his 1959 BSA motorcycle he bought while in the service up to his last birthday.  Terry also took great pride in teaching his children and grandchildren about engineering, building and nature.  He was also known among the family as the one who had the resources, knowledge and tools to fix about anything.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his brother Allen and his wife Joan Essig of Fla.; a daughter Janelle and her husband Robert Reiser of PA; a son T.J. and his wife Rebecca Essig of PA; a daughter Danielle and her husband Darren Auck of NJ; a nephew Allen Essig Jr.; and was the loving Pop-Pop to five grandchildren – Emme and Anee Reiser; Jacob, Sara and Lucas Essig.
