Obituary of Adam Jacob Alt Jr.

World War II Army Veteran

Adam J. Alt, 101, of Pittstown, NJ, passed away peacefully, but unexpectedly, on Saturday, June 8, 2019 at the Hunterdon Medical Center in Flemington NJ.

Adam was born in Newark, NJ in 1917 to Adam J. Alt, Sr. and Clara Zeitler Alt. After graduating high school, he began work at the Wilbur B. Driver Company as an office boy. In 1942, he enlisted in the US Army and served for four years as a Second Lieutenant, spending two years in the Persian Gulf. After the war, he returned to W.B. Driver and worked his way up to Vice President of Production. In 1973, he and his wife Ruth transferred to Orangeburg, SC where he managed the GTE Company, which was later bought by Verizon. He retired in 1979.

Adam married Ruth Engeman in 1941. They raised eight children in Livingston, NJ before moving to Bernardsville, NJ in 1963. After moving to Orangeburg, SC, he and Ruth purchased a vacation home on Fripp Island where they enjoyed many vacations with their children and their families.

Adam's beloved wife Ruth predeceased him in 2007 after 66 years of marriage. He is also predeceased by his three brothers Charles, Norman, and Edward Alt.

He is survived by his devoted children, Carol Schierbaum, Bonnie Stryker and her husband Tom, Dale Bellai, Gail Melvin and her husband Bill, Robert Alt and his wife Robyn, Janice Alt, Jeanne Alt, Jeffrey Alt and his wife Melody; fourteen grandchildren, sixteen great grandchildren, one great-great grandchild and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held privately by the family under the care of Martin Funeral Home, Clinton, NJ. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Adam's memory may be made to a charity of choice. Words of condolence may be sent to the family at www.martinfh.com
