Obituary of Charles W. Barski

Charles Walter Barski, Sr. Served as a US Army Combat Soldier during WWII Charles 'Sonny' Walter Barski Sr. passed away peacefully on Sunday, October 21, 2012 at his home in Washington Township, NJ, he was 86. Charles was born on June 8, 1926 in Paterson, NJ and he lived most of his life in Clifton, NJ. Mr. Barski was employed as an Accountant for Curtiss Wright Aircraft and Aeronautics in Woodridge, NJ for 22 years, and 18 years as Budget Director for St. Joseph's Hospital in Paterson, NJ. Mr. Barski retired many years ago at the age of 67. Mr. Barski honorably served his country as a Staff Sergeant in the US Army with the First Infantry Division during WWII, from Oct 1944 through post-war 1946. He mostly served in the Eastern European Theater with both the 18th and 26th Infantry Regiments and saw combat in Germany and Belgium as his unit fought its way through to Czechoslovakia. After the war in Europe ended he was promoted to Staff Sergeant and was in command of a unit charged to guard war criminals during the Nuremburg War Crimes Trials, in Nuremburg, Germany. Mr. Barski was awarded the WWII Victory medal, Eastern European Combat medal, Good Conduct medal, Rifle Marksmanship, and Combat Infantry badge. Mr. Barski was a devoted husband and a loving father of 6 children and 13 grandchildren. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Adeline Barski; dear father of Susan Shanagan and her husband Joseph; Carolyn Ruszkiewiecz and her husband Art; Annamarie Corvelli and her husband William; Elaine Campos and her husband Adelio; Charles Barski and his wife Chan; and Joyce Gralha and her husband Nelson; loving grandfather of Patrick Shanagan; Joshua, Matthew and Kate Ruszkiewiecz; Isabella Corvelli; Adam, Julian and Elizabeth Campos; Charles and Liya Barski; Trevor and Collin Gralha. Charles's Life Celebration includes visitation on Thursday, October 25th from 4:00 to 8:00 pm at Martin Funeral Home, 1761 Route 31, Clinton,NJ. There will be a funeral mass at 10:00 am on Friday, October 26th at St. Ann's RC Church, 30 Main Street (aka 6 Church St.), Hampton, NJ. Full military honors will be offered immediately following the mass on the church grounds. A private interment will take place at St. Ann's Cemetery at the convenience of the family.
