Joe, I know you are there. In the brief time I got to make your acquaintance at the bagel store you had always brought a laugh to my heart and a smile to my face. I saw such love with all who you befriended. Rest in peace, my friend.

Joe, My heart is broken. I will miss you and your funny witty sarcastic humor. I will miss your stories. I will miss just chatting and having coffee, listening to you, and Bobby banter at each other at Clinton Bagel. You guys were always making ellen and I laugh. I will miss your smile and just seeing you out and about. Rest in Peace Joe. And know how loved you were. xo

Joe was a great man who held an important intergenerational significance for me and my family. His stories were his own and they were amazing. But his presence was greater. He was the last eye witness of a generation of life for a whole branch of our family tree. We loved him for who he was. A force with which to be reckoned for sure... he was principled and opinionated in ways that made him stand out .... above and beyond. He spoke of his family with love and adoration. Our little Shumway branch of the tree loved him so and wish him peace until we all unite again. We love you Joe. Our condolences too all those who called him dad , grandpa, uncle, friend....or were just lucky enough to have him in their lives.

Rest in Peace, my friend Joseph. I only met you several years ago, through my life partner, Ellen Shumway, your cousin. You became a part of my life. We had dinners, lunches, winery trips, and even a cruise together. Our time together was much too short. Your stories entertained us every time we were together. You will not be forgotten. I will meet you in the hereafter and share a Stella. Goodbye Joe. Jim

Joe was not just my cousin. He was like a brother and a great friend. Joe had stories of his time in the Navy where his love of the sea began. He was happiest at sea breathing in the salt air and feeling the sunshine on his face. He also had stories of his time working in NY where he made many friends. Joe made friends wherever he went, ask his friends at the Clinton Bagel shop where he shared his funny stories. Of course my favorites were of family members I was too young to remember. and he brought them to life. We were both busy raising our families but as they grew up we started getting closer. When Audrey passed we got closer still and a year later when my Dad passed he was the sanity and strength I needed. He had a heart of gold, always generous, helping anyone who needed it. He was close to Patty, his daughter-in-law, who was more like the daughter he and Audrey never had. Patty was the one who made sure holidays were spent together. He loved spending time with family. Those of us who were fortunate enough to spend quality time with him are filled with loving memories and our lives are more enriched. While he was struggling to empty and sell his house he met Doreen who became his friend, his companion in life, where they traveled, laughed and enjoyed life together. But for the good care she gave him his life would have ended much sooner. He is now resting at peace with his Mom and Dad, Audrey, son David, brother Victor and sister Carol. I will miss you terribly Joe. We all love you, Ellen, Jim, Jeff, Scott Sara and kids,
