Born January 13, 1928, in Brooklyn, NY, she was the daughter of William and Margaret Hunter of Richmond Hill, Queens. Similar to many of her generation, Florence at a young age dealt with hardship and adversity. After graduation from high school in 1946, Florence, an accomplished roller skater, performed regularly with a skating troop at the old Madison Square Garden in N.Y.C.
In 1950, Florence married Navy gunner, Charles H. Schmidt of Springfield Gardens, Queens- a marriage that lasted until Charles's death in 2017. A long-time resident of Hunterdon, she spent the last 23 years in Lebanon Township.
In her lifetime, Florence was active in various PTA and Ladies' Aid church organizations, as well as the Women's Auxiliaries of the Disabled American Veterans and Military Order of the Purple Heart. At the time of her retirement from Ethicon in Somerville in 1985, Florence was a senior group leader in the Quality Assurance Division.
Since then, Florence and her husband traveled widely throughout the United States and Canada, including Alaska and Hawaii, and also visited the Caribbean, Iceland, and Great Britain. She also enjoyed cooking, gardening, ceramics, reading, and little children.
Florence Schmidt was a kind, gracious, and unselfish woman who devoted great energy to any task she undertook, whether raising a family, working, or engaging in social activities. She was always there when needed.
She is survived by her son Charles A. of Lebanon Twp., daughter Emily and son-in-law Jim McCabe of Parker, Colorado, and grandson James McCabe of Denver, CO.
