Mr. Monaco was one of the most dignified, inspirational, dedicated teachers I have ever had the honor of having in my education.
He demanded not perfection but in the student trying their best.
I was a frail youth who loved physical activity non the less. Mr. Monaco worked with me in having me build a confidence in myself and a love of fitness that has been with me over 60 years. So much so i developed myself and became a very strong big guy.
I ran into him a few times in the 70's after Ann Street School years and the last time I ran into him he was amazed how much I had grown. I thanked him for him being a great teacher. I thanked him for being a proud Italian. I told him how I was training with Bruno Sammartino, the Italian strongman World Heavyweight Wrestling Champ when times allowed, and he just was stunned to see and learn of the transformation. This is something nobody would have believed seeing me as a frail kid in the 60's.
We all can remember how tough he seemed to be and often brought out the paddle he called "Holy Joe" for those of us not towing the mark in respect and attention to his instructions. God, how I love the crab ball game, and feared the rings. Mr. Monaco would work with me little by little to be confident and believe in myself so that I became quite good and developed upper body strength.
I will never forget him. He remains in my memory an inspiration to what a teacher and a man should be. Strong yet gentle. Demanding of trying your best but patient to wait for it to emerge.
My deepest condolences to the family and friends and may God rest his soul in Heaven.
