We were very blessed to have Ino in our lives. She exemplified what it means to live a full, loving and
purposeful life. She was smart, talented, joyful, compassionate, loving and generous. She was beautiful
both inside and out. Personally I will always remember our 70's summer luncheons at our various homes;
Kenilworth, Edison, the Atlantic Highlands, etc. It was the 70's so lots of quiche, spinach salad, pastas and
Of course home made desserts! Our memories of Ino will be treasured. She will be dearly missed!

When I was 10 an aunt that Ino and I shared passed away. This aunt had been like a second mother to me and my sorrow was intense. However, I had gotten it in my head that I was too old to cry. I kept the pain inside and tried not to show how desperately sad I was. After the funeral Ino took me aside and reminded me that it was ok to show how I felt and that our aunt was in heaven so she was OK. Hearing that from Ino gave me the permission that I needed to finally grieve. It has been fifty years, but to this day I always remember that moment and that lesson. It has made my worst moments more bearable because I did not have to hide my feelings. Thank you Ino, God bless you.

INO, MY BUDDY, MY COLLEAGUE, MY INSPIRATION…
I received the news of Ino’s passing with utmost sadness. As tears were rolling down my face, I was reflecting on what this beautiful person meant to me. In 1976, my first year in Edison, I was assigned to teach a class of ninth graders. One day, one of the students received a low grade and begged me not to tell Mrs. Sowder as she didn’t want to diappoint her. Throughout the year and by the students’ comments, I learned that Mrs.Sowder was a Spanish teacher (in John Adams) whom they respected and liked very much.
In 1977, I was assigned to John Adams and I had the pleasure of meeting the beloved Mrs. Sowder. I was immediately captivated by the classy manner in which she treated everyone in school: with a big smile on her face, she made each one feel special. She and I hit it off right away, and that was the beginning of our BFF journey.
As time went by, I learned that Ino was an incredible family member. She happily spoke about her Mima and Pablo, Ida, Armando, Ida’s boys, and, of course, Armandito. She was very proud of her husband’s accomplishments, but the love of her life, her hero —as she called him— was Matthew. Her eyes would light up when she spoke about him. She used to talk about his adventures and she and I compared military stories, due to the fact that my sons were in the Air Force as well.
Ino was a priceless friend who cared about the well-being of others. Her compassion made her the teacher whom students who needed a little extra love were assigned to. Her patience and sweetness made people feel at ease. Probably what I admired the most was her positive vision in a crisis, her calculated calm and optimism were an inspiration to me. She believed that she could face any challenges that came her way.
Professionaly, I enjoyed very much the 34 years I worked with Ino. I had fun with her creativity, more so, during our last years teaching at the elementary level where she allowed her imagination to run free. The angels must be delighted with the new arrival, she must be teaching them Spanish through songs.
Ino brought joy to my life. My heart is broken, but I thank God for placing such a unique, superb person in my path. Rest in Peace, my dear friend! I will love you forever!

For days I've been wracking my brain and memories so I could write a poignant, meaningful tribute to Ino. I'm afraid I've come up short. Maybe it's because of the amazing overall influence Ino had on my life, my heart. Maybe because I have little to say that hasn't been said before because that's how Ino influenced everybody. There was so much goodness, intellect, humor, loyalty and dedication packed into that little body.
Ino walked the talk. That's evidenced by the other's comments here. I guess learning how widespread Ino's proactive heart was makes me appreciate what she took the time to do for me even more. During her busy life of helping others, being a great friend and serving selflessly, she took me in for 5 days after I had surgery. She gave me the comfort and nourishment I needed, in all its' valuable forms. Her absence has left it's own special hole in my heart that wan't be filled by any other. I guess that's the painful beauty of witnessing a godly life well lived. Thank you dearest Ino. <3

Dear Bill and Matt,
Ino and I met over 40 years ago at John Adams Middle School. We became fast friends and shared many wonderful times together in school and socializing with friends and our families at our homes.
Ino always loved to entertain and going to her house for a
“Ino” home cooked meal was always a delicious culinary experience!
Ino was a kind, compassionate, loving person. I know how much she will be missed.
Bill and Matt, May the memories you have of Ino help to comfort you.

Ino Sowder, you were there on the best day of my life and the worst day. You took control when it was needed and stayed in the background when it was appropriate. It was my privilege to be your Brother-In-Law and an honor to be your friend. I admired your patience, intelligence, humor, kindness and understanding. Thank you for everything you have done for me through the various stages of our lives. I will miss you, but I will never forget you.

I was blessed to meet the warm and witty Ino at Church. She was so engaging and inspiring, working with Interfaith Hospitality Network, preparing amazing meals in the Church kitchen, checking in on members and friends, which I considered myself. I learned so much from her about grace, giving, humility and joy! She will be so missed, but has left so much behind in those of us that try to emulate what we have learned from her.

Dear Mr. Sowder and the Sowder family:
I am writing to express my deepest condolences and sympathy to you and your family. I was a student in Mrs. Sowder's Spanish class at J.P Stevens High School in the late 1980's (in fact, if memory serves, I am pretty sure that she taught me for several years!). I want you to know that Mrs. Sowder had a profound impact on my life, and I hope that by sharing a little bit of my life story, you will derive some comfort in knowing that she not only had a life well lived, but also contributed meaningfully to the lives of so many students like myself.
During my senior year in high school, I had my heart set on attending a certain college. Ultimately, my "dream" college decided to place me on the "waitlist", and I was told by admission officers that the chances that I would be accepted from the "waitlist" were pretty much zero. Although I was heartbroken, I was fortunate to be admitted to several other fantastic schools, and I was all set to attend another one. With four days to go prior to my high school graduation, I received a letter from my "dream" college informing me of my acceptance from the waitlist, and I was shocked and elated! It was truly one of the happiest days of my life.
Sometime later - I am so old now that I cannot remember many of the details - I found out that Mrs. Sowder had learned about my "dream" school waitlist decision and decided to write a letter to the school on my behalf in support of my candidacy. I have no doubt that her letter made a difference in the decision to admit me from the waitlist. Sadly, I do not remember exactly what I did when I learned about what Mrs. Sowder did for me - I'd like to think that I expressed my gratitude somehow to her back then - but I do know that I have tried my best to fulfill the opportunity provided by her selfless act of dedication to me as her student.
The "dream" college was Princeton, and I proceeded to go to medical school and trained as a doctor in interventional cardiology. I am now on the faculty at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, and I am very proud to say that 1) I continue to use the Spanish Mrs. Sowder taught me in my interactions with patients (although I am not quite as fluent as she would want me to be!) and 2) more importantly like Mrs. Sowder, I have become a teacher of medical students. I know she has had an impact on so many students' lives as a teacher, and she has truly inspired me to become a teacher as well. I am so grateful to her for helping me on my life's journey, and I hope to make her proud by embracing every opportunity to help students pursue their dreams, like she did for me many years ago.
May her memory be a blessing to you and your family.
With sincere respect and my deepest sympathy,
Jeff Trost

Dear Bill, Matt, and Armando,
With all my heart I offer my deepest and most sincere condolences on the passing of dear Ino.
Even though our paths did not cross frequently over the past few years because of our move to Florida, I treasured our friendship of over 40 years.
She was a kind, caring, and funny friend. Her concerned phone call to us shortly after Hurricane Irma hit our area in Florida in September 2017 certainly showed what a caring friend she was.
May God give you all comfort and solace during this trying time.

I worked with Ino when she was a teacher in JPS High School. I was in the Child Study Team and developed academic programs for special education students. Whenever one of our students was placed in one of her classes, she always proved to be a very cooperative, caring, and compassionate teacher who was willing to accommodate those with various types o
0f learning disabilities. As a co-worker, she was always smiling, upbeat, and friendly. I was so sorry to hear of her passing. I extend my deepest sympathy to her family.

Ino was a true friend and blessing to our family; a true angel. My heart is saddened but my life is full of joy with the memories we shared. She repeatedly tried to teach me to cook to no avail but always believed she could get me to create something remotely similar to her delightful dishes. Ino will always be in my heart and I am a better person and disciple of Christ because of her influence on me. Until we meet again my dear friend.

My sincere condolences to Wilber and Mateo on the loss of your beloved wife and mother. I remember when Ino invited me to her house because there was a snowstorm and I lived so far away. Ino whipped up a gourmet meal in less than an hour and provided me with a toothbrush and pajamas , so I could spend the night at her home in Edison. Her kindness and hospitality will never be forgotten. She was also a phenomenal teacher and friend. Denise Maruca. (former colleague)
