Obituary of Donald L. MacLean

Dr. Donald L. MacLean of Clinton passed away on Thursday, January 31, 2008 at Hunterdon Medical Center in Raritan Township. He was born in Toronto Canada and was the son of the late Donald "Sandy" and the late RaeMarie "June" MacLean. Dr. MacLean was a 1966 BS Chemical Engineering Graduate of University of Cincinnati. He continued his education with an MS and Ph. D from the University of Tennessee in Chemical Engineering, specializing in polymer science. He also obtained an MBA from Duke University in 1983, where he was selected as a Fuqua Scholar. Dr. MacLean was Vice President-Gases Technology for the BOC Group Inc. in Murray Hill, NJ. His BOC teams have received many internal awards as well as three R&D 100 awards and a Kirkpatrick Honor Award. He has over 40 U.S. patents and numerous foreign patents, and 22 technical publications in the fields of industrial gas technology, membrane and adsorption technology, polymers and polymer processing, and chemical and refinery processes. Dr. MacLean was an early leader in the development and commercialization of polymeric membranes for gas separation. In 1984, while at Monsanto, was on a team that received the prestigious Kirkpatrick Award. He was a past member of the International Advisory Board of the Gas Separation and Purification Journal, member of the Industrial Advisory Committees (Dept. of Chemical Eng.) at Rutgers as well as the University of Tennessee, and a member of the R&D Council of NJ. He was the BOC representative on the Industrial Research Institute, European Industrial Research Management Association, and the Council for Chemical Research. Dr. MacLean was an avid tennis player with a national ranking in singles. He is survived by his wife, Carol; his children, Rick, Brett, Eric, and Morgan; grandchildren, Dawson and Kenan, and sisters, RaeMarie and LuAnne. Visitation will be on Tuesday, February 5, 2008 from 1:00pm-3:00pm and 5:00-7:00pm at Martin Funeral Home, 1761 Rt. 31, Clinton, NJ A Funeral service will be held on Tuesday evening at 6:30PM at the funeral home. Interment will be held privately.
