Obituary of Edward F. Carroll

Edward F. Carroll, age 66, of the Annandale Section of Clinton Twp., NJ died Sunday, May 18, 2008 at Hunterdon Medical Center in Raritan Twp., NJ. Mr. Carroll was born May 28, 1941 in Lansdowne, Pa. the son of the late Vincent and the late Margaret (nee Donnelly) Carroll. He served in the United States Army from 1963 to 1965 during the Vietnam Era. Edward resided in the Annandale Section of Clinton Twp., NJ for the past 8 years and previous to that, he lived in Baptisttown, NJ (Hunterdon County). He was a Volunteer for Meals On wheels in Hunterdon County and he enjoyed Salt Water Fishing and Hiking. Ed Carroll was the quintessential community journalist. He began his journalism career as editor of The Yukon Sentinel while serving in the U. S. Army at Fort Wainwright, Fairbanks, Alaska. He went on to lead groups of weekly newspapers as executive editor in three states beginning with The Princeton Packet (NJ) Group from 1965 to 1975, moving on to lead the Time, Inc.-owned Pioneer Press in north shore Chicago for four years. He moved in 1979 to Plymouth, Massachusetts where he served as executive editor of MPG Communications, and later Beacon Communications in Concord, MA. During his tenure in Massachusetts he garnered numerous editorial awards including best paper in New England several years in a row for both groups. He returned to New Jersey in 1988 to head the editorial division of Forbes Newspapers in Somerville, where his direction took him from six to 14 newspapers in fewer than 24 months. Ed Carroll became assistant metro editor of The Daily Record in 1999. There he developed weekend enterprise stories with beat reporters and edited the yearly 170-page guide for newcomers which net him top prizes in the Gannett and New Press Association competitions. Mr. Carroll is survived by his beloved Wife of 39 years: Rosemary(nee Lalevee) Carroll, his three Sons: Edward Carroll Jr. of Clinton Twp., NJ, Brian Russell Carroll of Guttenberg, NJ, & Patrick Liam Carroll of Portland, Maine and his Sister: Mary Jane Aklonis of Lambertville, NJ. There will be a Funeral Mass on Wednesday May 21st at 11:00 am at Immaculate Conception RC Church, 316 Old Allerton Road, Annandale. Family & Friends are invited to meet Directly at the Church. The Interment will take place at the Immaculate Conception Cemetery on the Church Grounds with a Luncheon immediately following at the Beaver Brook Country Club.
