Ann Durnin

Obituary of Ann E Durnin

Ann Elizabeth Durnin passed away peacefully at home surrounded by her family.  She was 103 years old.  The youngest of four siblings of Irish immigrants, she was born and raised in Jersey City during the Depression. Her first car was a Model T Ford with a rumble seat and a hand crank start – a definite challenge when it stalled on a city hill.

After high school, she trained as a secretary and worked at a variety of positions, including at the Brooklyn Navy Yard during WWII and as an executive secretary for Springs Mills in NYC.  After marriage, she moved to Chatham where she raised her family and lived for 35 yrs.  Always active in St Patrick’s Parish, she was a dedicated member of the Mother’s Guild, and Rosary Society.  After she retired, she moved to Basking Ridge where she was involved in the Long Hill Women’s Club whose programs benefitted various local charities.  Providing a wonderful example for her children, Ann volunteered her whole life for various groups and programs, including the American Cancer Society, Meals-On-Wheels, Morris View Nursing Home, and St Hubert’s Pet Therapy program.

She enjoyed reading, dogs and keeping up with current events.  Her greatest love was being a mother and friend to her five children, Dennis, Eileen Campos (Paul), Sheila, Diane, Neil (Mary) and grandchildren Travis, Mary Kate and Jonathan.  She will be deeply missed by all who loved her.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered on Thursday, October 20th at 11:00 am at St. Patrick’s Church, 85 Washington Avenue, Chatham NJ 07928. To send words of condolence to Ann’s family please visit, www.martinfh.com
