If you knew Derwyn, you know that his remarkable musical gifts were surpassed only by his unwavering mission to make even the most dour curmudgeon smile—beware the innocent restaurant greeter who's "Sit wherever you like, sir." is answered by Derwyn sitting in the middle of the floor. I can summon at least a dozen silly memories like that to diffuse any one of the difficult ones. I miss you so much, Derwyn.
I had the good fortune to be a classmate of Derwyn at Tufts. We enjoyed playing jazz together, writing and performing quintet arrangements for tenor saxophone, piano, guitar, bass and drums. He was a good friend.
