Obituary of David B. Eckwielen

David Bernard Eckwielen, 87, of Califon, New Jersey passed away peacefully on Thursday June 15th, 2023. David was born on May 1st, 1936 to the late John and Elizabeth Eckwielen in Grand Rapids, Michigan. David grew up in Michigan AKA “The Great Lakes State” where he also developed a passion for the outdoors.

David earned his bachelor's degree from Michigan State University in 1958. And on June 15th, 1963 he married the love of his life, his wife, Judith. David was also a caring father to Scott, Steven, Jacqueline and the late Janice. Before his retirement David worked for the State of New Jersey where he served as the Superintendent of Spruce Run and Round Valley state parks.

David shared his passion of the outdoors with his family, be it traveling to someplace new or revisiting a favorite campsite or hiking trail, you can guarantee he never wanted to be locked inside. David also shared his love of hunting and fishing with many family and friends. David liked to give back to the community through various philanthropic ventures, volunteering at the Open Cupboard Food Pantry in Clinton, New Jersey and Lower Valley Presbyterian Church located in Califon, New Jersey.  David was also a member of the Hunterdon Hills Sportsman Association for many years.

David will be forever missed by his beloved wife of 60 years Judith Eckwielen, son Scott Eckwielen, son Steven Eckwielen and his wife April, daughter Jacqueline Eckwielen and her partner Daniel Medina, grandchildren Zoie Eckwielen, Jared Eckwielen, and Riley Medina. He is also survived by his sister Marsha Abbey as well as nieces and nephews.

David is predeceased by his daughter Janice and by his parents John and Elizabeth.

Services were held privately in accordance with the family’s wishes.
