Obituary of Shirley W. Phinney

Shirley W. Phinney passed away peacefully at home on August 17, 2023, surrounded by family, close friends and her little dog Roxi too!

Shirley was the beloved wife of the late James N. Phinney, with whom she shared 60 years of marriage.  She was the daughter of the late Joe E. and Emma S. Winbinger.

Shirley is survived by her two children Derrell W. Phinney and Carrie P. McCarthy; her grandchildren - Jon,  Sara, and Kayla and partner Jacob ; her great grandchildren - TJ and Noah:  From  Jim’s side - the rest of the Phinney Clan  , sister-in-law - Elizabeth A. Phinney : nieces and nephews - Monique and Glen, Win and Jodi, and Kurt and Pam,  and their children and their children’s children.

Shirley was born in Cuba Kansas in 1935 and moved to a farm in Boring, Oregon in 1937.  Shirley was in the graduating class of ’53 at Sandy High School. She Graduated from Pacific University with a Bachelor of Science degree in 1957 and continued as a graduate assistant in the physical education dept., where she would later meet her husband, Jim who was also working at the University.

Shirley and Jim married on June 24, 1959, in Forest Grove, Oregon and moved to New Jersey in 1963. Shirley taught Physical Education and Health in the Plainfield School District for over 20 yrs. After retiring she decided to work part time as a local school bus driver in Hunterdon County. Over the years Shirley was involved with Arc of Hunterdon County and Special Olympics.
