Obituary of Frederick Plushanski
Frederick “Fred” Plushanski, age 94, of Asbury, NJ, passed away peacefully on May 20th, 2024. Fred was born in Glen Gardner, NJ, to parents Tessie and Alexander Plushanski along with 6 brothers and 4 sisters.
In Hampton High School, Fred was the captain of his soccer team. The day after classes were over, and even before receiving his diploma, Fred and one of his friends enlisted in the Marine Corp to be in the Service, like some of his older brothers. Fred was fortunate enough to be a runner for the most famous Marine ever, Chesty Puller. He was also fortunate enough to be given his first shot of whiskey while sharing the same Fox Hole with Chesty Puller, who told him “this should help keep you warm.”
Corporal Fred Plushanski was involved in the famous retreat from the Frozen Chosin Reservoir. He has received numerous medals, accommodations, and Military Honors for his service. After serving four years in the Marines, Fred pursued a career in Minor League baseball playing for the Vidalia Indians of the Giants organization.
It was while playing baseball in Georgia that he met his wife of 71 years, Vondelle Kea. After getting married they moved back to NJ where Fred became a Hunterdon County farmer for the rest of his life. He opened West Norton Farms Dairy Store where they sold their own milk.
Fred will mostly be remembered as an outstanding grandfather and father. Always friendly and happy to all who came his way. He will be greatly missed.
In addition to his wife, Vondelle, of 71 years, Fred is survived by his son Brian and his wife Michelle; his three grandchildren, Brian, Allison, Mike and his wife Jill and their son Dean. Preceding Fred in passing were his six brothers and three sisters. His younger loving sister, Alice, who really helped care for him in his final days, still lives in the same house on the family farm in Glen Gardner where most of the children were born.
Memorial visitation will be held on Wednesday, May 29th from 5:00 until 8:00 PM at Martin Funeral Home, located at 1761 Route 31, Clinton NJ 08809.
