Sophia DeTorres

Obituary of Sophia Sheridan DeTorres

Sophia Sheridan DeTorres of Pittstown, NJ passed away on August 22, 2024 at the age of 16. By all accounts, Sophia brought light and love to all of those she touched in her short 16 years.

Sophia was born on May 10, 2008 at Somerset Hospital, the day before Mother’s Day, and brought home to the Town of Clinton. She was a lifelong Hunterdon County resident and Jersey Girl who went to Union Township Elementary, Franklin Township School and North Hunterdon High School.

Sophia loved her family fiercely. Her inside jokes and bear hugs with her brother and tiktok dances and movie nights with her sister will be missed. Mom and Dad have so many memories and special moments that they will carry with them for the rest of their lives.

She loved the beach, Broadway shows and hanging out with her people – but mostly, she loved and lived for serving others. At NHHS, she was active in Unified Leadership and Unified Sports and talked all the time about the students who filled her heart as much as she did theirs. She was president of Student Council, student board delegate and vice president of the National Junior Honor Society during her time at FTS. She was always looking for volunteer opportunities and for ways to give back to her school and broader community. Using her talents to sing the national anthem for her brother’s youth baseball opening day or leading the back-stage crew for her sister’s school plays and talent shows combined her love of volunteerism and family.

A well-rounded student, Sophia was driven to succeed and excelled in the classroom. She started the process of visiting colleges with Boston College, Cornell, and Wake Forest on her early shortlist. In keeping with her drive to help people, she was looking to major in psychology. Sophia spent 11 years dancing competitively, winning many top awards in both individual and group performances. She was part of the cross country and track teams in high school and played basketball and in the theater and chorus programs in middle school.

Sophia is survived by her loving parents George DeTorres and Noelle Boyd; her brother, George, and her sister, Sadie; maternal grandparents William Boyd and Gail Boyd and her paternal grandparents Charles and Linda DeTorres; Aunts Lauren Griffin, Karen DeTorres, Nicole DeTorres, Leigh "Natalie" Boyd and Beth Soria; Uncles Bill DeTorres, James DeTorres and Dominic Soria; cousins Riley, Dylan, Jessica, Keri, Billy, Ryle, Tommy, Kyla and River; many extended family members, including her “fuzzins”, and countless friends that she so easily made at every turn in this life.

Sophia is gone way too soon, but we are comforted by this quote that resonates so deeply: “There are some who bring a light so great to the world that even after they are gone the light remains.” Everyone should carry the light she left and seek to make positive change in this world in her memory.  She will now be our forever angel and look over us in heaven.

Sophia’s family plans to start a foundation in her name in the near future to give back to the community that she loved so deeply.
