Sandy,
I have not had much contact with John in ten years but used to see him frequently at fundraisers for elected officials. I just googled him after coming across an old note and wanted to reach out to send him my best and catch up.
Instead I reach out to offer my heartfelt condolence. John's personable demeanor and genuine smile came from a deeply authentic place and I am grateful to have known him even casually.
Be assured of my prayer for you and your family. I believe that the bonds of love are stronger than death. May you find some comfort in gentle moments, a sunrise, a sense memory, the joy of your grandchildren, some simple sense of that connection even still.

He is gone too soon. Much too soon.
I met “JP” (later Jake) in third grade. “Bold as brass”, Miss McGinley said. He was one of the “triumvirate” of friends in High School. Sharp, bold, optimistic and outgoing. Whether fighting off a carload of muggers with a tennis racket, exploring tumbling castles or flying the Firebird, there could only be one Jake.

I did not know John Murray Phelps Jr as a grandfather and I envy those of you who did. I remember him as the tallest at the children’s table during Thanksgiving dinners. To this day I remember how as a teenager, nearly an adult, he would stop and sit down and play games with the youngest cousin or sibling there: with a grace I have seldom seen in a young man. I watched from the shore as he rowed for his school. I traveled down from Canada to celebrate his wedding.
From visiting with the Phelps', I remember boyhood endeavors, Johnnie (Jr) practicing his instrument, and running in the cool morning air, to go raise the flag. There came a day when I would raise my own children. And the memories of a Father who wanted so much for his son: and a son who understood and always did his level (considerable) best, helped me to set my goals.
My cousin, is laid to rest today, a will deserved rest. My condolences to those of you who face tomorrow without him. I carry my tiny piece still.

I want to express my sincere sorrow and deepest sympathies to you and your family. I got to know John when we worked at Brown and Brown in Florham Park. He was a good business colleague. My fondest memory is when we played together in a golf tournament. I was very concerned about my lack of golf skills, but John put me at ease and gave me a few pointers. He was so kind and understanding of my bad golf shots. We truly had a wonderful day. I am very sorry I am unable to attend the service to pay my respects.
My thoughts and prayers are with you and God bless,

We are very saddened at your loss. John had such a great and hearty spirit. He had a gift of cheering people up. When we were forming the early St. Matthew's Choir his deep bass was greatly appreciated. He loved to pass on his father's wisdom in saying such as "It don't cost a nickel to be nice." His legacy of goodness and wholesomeness will live on in his family and friends. Our best regards, Jack and Julia

This is so incredibly sad, my heart goes out to you. John was a special man, with a brilliant mind, a gifted conversationalist, and most of all, a kind heart. A proud husband (we often heard of the beautiful gardens you designed Sandy) and a loving father/grandfather, (there was always a picture to share of his beautiful, growing family). Kevin, your father often spoke in such endearing terms of you and the joy it brought him to have you working with him. My heart goes out to you.
This is such an immeasurable loss to his family, friends and loved ones, in the prime of his life.
May God give you the strength to make it through this most difficult time.

I read this obituary with great sadness. I worked with John at Blue Cross and I would sum up this gentleman as a "man of principle". I recall telling him that he had too much principle when he would stand for what was right, despite a corporate world based on politics. A most decent family man, he carried himself as a model of husbands and fathers. He was always ready to speak of his wife and children with the fondest look in his eyes.
I can't say enough about John, so I won't further try, other than to say that my prayers are with his family at this most difficult time, and of course for John, as I am sure he entered the Gates of Heaven, and smiles down upon me now as I write.

Sandy and all of John's familiy, I am shocked, saddened and so sorry to hear of John's passing. I met John in my first class at Penn freshman year. We became fast friends, joined the fraternity together and roomed together. He was the best. He was fun to be with and one of the nicest and most sincere guys you will ever meet. We had many great times in the fraternity house. John could be a little mischievous and pull an occasional prank on a younger brother. All in good fun. Such great memories.
I last saw John in 2013 when he came down to the DC area for my 60th birthday party. He made a special trip and gave me a nice bottle of Irish whiskey and some Guinness. He drove all the way home that night because he had a family commitment the next day in NJ. That was John.
I was looking forward to seeing John at our 40th Penn reunion in May. It will be incomplete without seeing John and his smiling face.
My deepest condolences to the entire Phelps family.

I am deeply saddened by John's sudden passing. Having had the privilege of knowing him for 25 years, I feel lucky. He was my first true mentor and became a great and dear friend. Although we lost touch for a few years, I am so thankful we reconnected. We spent quite a few hours on the golf course together, and it was always so much fun to just hang out and chat with him. One of my all-time best memories was the three-day baseball trip we took 25 years ago.
John was the classiest and nicest guy I have ever known. In a word, he was the "best". He will be greatly missed but always remembered.
Rest in Peace John.
