Obituary of John T. Cahill

John T. Cahill, 86, passed away peacefully on May 10 in Flemington, NJ. He was a longtime resident of Alexandria Township, NJ and Lake St. Catherine, Vermont. Known as Jack, he was born on Staten Island to Thomas A. Cahill and Gertrude Willoe Cahill on October 31, 1929. He went to Curtis High School and graduated in 1946. He apprenticed for and later became a member of the United New York & New Jersey Sandy Hook Pilots Benevolent Association serving as a harbor pilot for the port of New York and New Jersey for 42 years. He also served on the executive committee of the organization for many years. He was active in local business and civic affairs in Hunterdon County throughout his life. He was mayor of Alexandria Township, and president of the Delaware Valley Regional High School Board of Education. He was on the board of directors of The Hunterdon County National Bank of Flemington and transitioned to the boards of First National State Bank and First Fidelity Bank after a series of mergers. Though he had many interests, his greatest love was his family. He had six children with his wife of 46 years Betty Keohane Cahill, who predeceased him in 2000. He is survived by his children: Sharon Klamik (Mike), Kerry Cahill-De Fuccio (Richard), Kevin Cahill (Donna Flotteron), Brian Cahill (Chris), all of Hunterdon County; and Coleen Cahill (Stephen Short) and Maureen Cahill (Zesty Meyers), both of New York City; and 11 grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister Cathleen Murray of Holmdel, NJ and his second wife, Pelli Wheaton of Stockton, NJ and three nieces and nephews among other relatives. A mass of Christian Burial will be offered at St. Catherine of Siena Roman Catholic Church 2 White Bridge Road Pittstown, NJ on Friday May 13 at 10 am. Burial will follow at Locust Grove Cemetery in Quakertown, NJ. Friends and relatives may gather on Thursday May 12, from 2:00 until 7:00pm at the Martin Funeral Home 1761 Route 31, Clinton, NJ. Everyone is asked to please meet directly at church on Friday morning. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hunterdon Regional Cancer Center and The Trustees of the Sailors' Snug Harbor, all donations may be made through www.inmemoryof-memorial.org.
