Obituary of Cornelius J. McCartney, Jr.

Cornelius J. McCartney, Jr., age 71, of Hampton, NJ died Saturday, October 26, 2013 at Hunterdon Medical Centerin Raritan Twp., NJ. Mr. McCartney was born August 20, 1942 in Orange, NJ. He was the son of the late Hugh Neil and the late Clara (Burgess) McCartney. He resided in Hampton, NJ for the past 38 years and previous to that he lived in West Orange, NJ. He was an engineer at Bell Labs in Whippany, NJ for many years. Mr. McCartney proudly served his country in the US Navy from 1960 to 1964. He was a longtime member of the Hampton Fire Company and served as secretary. Neil served as mayor of Hampton Borough from 1989 through 1993. He also served on the Hampton town council and board of education. Mr. McCartney was a tireless volunteer and was very instrumental in the new addition to the Hampton municipal building. Neil was an avid golfer but most importantly he enjoyed spending time with his grandsons and family. Neil is survived by his beloved wife of 44 years, Gene Marie (McCabe) McCartney, his daughters: Bernadette Leiby & her husband, Jeremy of Washington Twp., NJ, Michelle McCartney of Lawrenceville, NJ and Frances McCartney of Morristown, NJ, and his cherished grandsons, Tristan and Cameron. Additional survivors include his sisters; Eileen and Patricia and his brothers; Hugh Patrick, Joseph, James and William and dozens of nieces & nephews. He was pre-deceased by his sisters; Barbara and Veronica. Neil's Life Celebration will include a memorial gathering on Wednesday, October 30th from 4:00 to 8:00 pm at Martin Funeral Home, 1761 Route 31, Clinton, NJ. There will be a memorial service on Thursday, October 31st at 10:00 am also at the funeral home. The interment will be held privately and at the convenience of the family.
