We were very saddened to hear about George. He was quite a guy, and was great at sharing old stories of Pattenburg, including working on the Lehigh Valley Railroad as a young guy, and then meeting a pretty young girl, who remained to be the center of his life for almost 70 years. Betty & George have been a constant part of living here in Pattenburg. George was a dependable, hardworking guy, who always put his family first, and cherished his wife Betty. He always had a funny story to tell, and was lighthearted, but was having a tough time this past year when his health began to decline. I will always remember him as an honorable man, who served his country well, and remained to give back through the different groups he was a member of. He would talk about his faith openly, and always wanted to learn more about the Bible. I know George is looking down on us, and will never be too far away. Our loss, is now heaven's gain..His service at the Pattenburg Methodist Church, was a reflection of how many peoples lives were touched by knowing him. My heartfelt condolences to the family and, my other childhood mom, Betty. I have many sweet and treasured memories of George. A favorite memory is from when I was 3 or four. I recall being in their Main Street living room, with the sunlight flooding in. George had a big ole tabby cat on his lap. Perhaps I was tormenting the cat but that is when he taught me how to scratch behind a cat's ear. It truly is a life long skill and vivid memory. Thanks Mr. Halko.
A fine man who will be missed by so many. One of my cherished memories is of a boat ride on Lake Lure with his daughter Sue. He kept us laughing the whole time, and was always ready with a funny story. Generosity was a hallmark, passed on to his daughter, and appreciated by a wide circle of friends. He will be sorely missed.
I am very sorry for your loss. Mr. Halko was always a nice guy. I will be gone this weekend in Virginia so condolences to everyone. Prayers with your family at this time.
