My “Donna Days”
Were full of fun..,
Holidays, Birthdays and religious celebrations (not just our own, but our siblings and cousins too!) Dressing up for church, with hats (or doilies) on our heads and brand new patent leather shoes on our feet. Sometimes getting scolded for misbehaving during those long Latin Masses, but almost always ending in “sleep”overs - that involved little sleep and lots of late night laughter.
Simple pleasures...
Card games, watercoloring and color by number books, Chinese checkers, board games, wagon rides and catching fireflies.
Loaded with adventure, including...
Road trips with Nana to Anderson’s Apple Orchard, Larney’s Dairy Farm (I wasn’t there for the broken arm!), up to Vermont or out to get comic books, penny candy, milkshakes and sour apple or Blackjack gum at the 5 & dime!
Exploring downtown Berkeley Hgts and New Providence as “free- range kids”...off to Uncle Frank’s, Fenarro’s Farm, to the library or skating; then to the WoodGlen store or through the woods and down to the creek on Hill Rd.
Hiking the Appalachian trail, canoeing the Delaware and spelunking at Summer camp.
Being Fashionable in the ‘60’s - (like the Hippies) with love-beads, peace signs, colorful wire rimmed glasses and mini skirts with go-go boots and Yardley lip gloss!
And entertained by...
Record albums, 45’s and 78’s! The Beetles and The Rolling Stones!
MAD magazine, Archie comics, Green acres and Petticoat Junction on TV.
Enjoying...
Fresh garden produce - berries, fresh corn and tomato sandwiches, pancake breakfasts, and buttered noodles for supper.
Loving and being fiercely protective of
animals - kittens, dogs, horses, bunnies..,
and others - especially her family and friends, of which I was grateful to have been a part of.
I am so sorry that the time has come for Donna to depart, and that the good times we had have come to an end, but the joyful memories we shared will forever remain within my heart, as will her fun loving, adventurous, kind and protective spirit. I know she will always be with each of us, in those special moments. Sometimes when you least expect it — while playing cards, hugging a child, fishing, watching the sunset or enjoying the taste of fresh corn on the cob, you may not be able to hold her hand, or see her face, but you will feel the warmth in your heart and know she’s still present, because that is what her life was, a gift we all enjoyed.
Thank you, Donna, for being a wonderful part of my life.
May you Rest In Peace.
With love always to you, your family, your friends and to all those who’s life you have touched,
Your cousin,
Nancy
