Obituary of Dr. John Thomson III, D.D.S.

Dr. John “Jack” Thomson III, D.D.S. 85, died peacefully at home on Monday, September 26, 2022 with his family by his side.  He was born March 22, 1937, in Orange, NJ to John and Henrietta Thomson III who had come from Scotland to live in Kearny, NJ.

Jack graduated Kearny High School in 1954, then went on to further his education by attending Houghton College, graduating in 1958. He met his beloved wife, Alyce (nee Van Atter) while attending Houghton College and married in 1960.  Jack graduated from the University of Maryland Dental School, in 1962 and joined the U.S. Airforce.  He moved his growing family to NJ in 1964, where he would start his dental practice in Califon for 45 years.

Jack enjoyed many adventures like vacationing in Bermuda yearly with Alyce, flying his Cessna plane, riding his motorcycle, and taking his grandkids to amusement parks.  After work on Saturdays, you'd often find him at the Flemington Race Track.  He was thrilled to go to the Indy 500 twice.  He enjoyed his Yankees, Giants, and Devils games.

Jack went on two-week mission trips to South America for many years, He would do dentistry in jungle villages and the people were very grateful.  Jack and Alyce were members of the former Clinton Baptist Church (now South Ridge Community Church).  He was voted a "Lifetime Elder" and served on many committees over the years.

In addition to his parents, Jack was predeceased by his son, John Scott Thomson.

He is survived by his beloved wife Alyce; daughter, Linda and her husband Trip Schweighardt; son, Robert and his wife Alicia; five grandchildren, Kristin Watson and her husband Andy, Joey Schweighardt and his wife Amanda, Kyle Schweighardt and his wife Caitlin, Sarah Thomson, and Joshua Thomson; his six great-grandchildren, Natalie, Katherine, Madeline, Quint, Jack, and Finley.

Jack's family would like to thank Ariel Bautista and his family for their excellent care of Jack over the past five years.

Public visitation will be held on Friday, September 30, 2022, at South Ridge Community Church, 7 Pittstown Road, Clinton NJ 08809 from 4:00 to 7:00 pm. Funeral service will be held on Saturday, October 1, 2022, at 10:00 am at South Ridge Community Church. Arrangements are under the care of Martin Funeral Home, Clinton NJ.
